Dar es Salaam. The Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Energy, Dr Hamisi Mwinyimvua, says it is imperative for the country to fully utilise available energy resources to make a stride in development.

Dr Mwinyimvua made the remark yesterday in his speech that was presented by the director of the energy sector, Ms Joyce Kisamu, during the second energy platform annual workshop programme.

He said, currently, Tanzania utilises a small portion of the available energy resources, stressing that it is high time the country took bold measures in order to realise development.

“Developed countries are measured by their ability to utilise the available energy resources. We have no choice but to full advantage of the energy resources we have,” he said. The fifth phase government plans to industrialise the country, but without reliable energy, the drive would be futile.

Dr Mwinyimvua said “by utilizing natural gas for industrial use, the cost of running the machines will be low thus lowering the cost of products making them affordable to everyone”.

Furthermore he said the Minister of Energy Medard Kalemani recently connected two household to the Mikocheni natural gas pipeline as part of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC).

Dr Kalemani said “using natural gas can save up to 40 per cent compared with using other energy sources”.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor Of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Mr David Mfinanga said the workshop aims at discussing the means to utilize both renewable and non renewable resources.

“Those who have conducted research will present their findings and based on this research then we will be able to come up with the best means to utilize and invest on the available sustainable energy sources” said Mfinanga
