Dar es Salaam. The French Development Agency (AFD) targets to provide a total of €600 million (about Sh 1.6 trillion) to support Tanzania’s development projects between 2017 and 2021.

According to a statement issued yesterday, €500 million (Sh1.32 trillion) of the aforementioned amount will be mobilised for government projects, mainly in water and sanitation, energy and transport.

The AFD high level delegation led by chief executive officer Rémy Rioux is in the country for two-day visit, which ends today. It is part of their East African region mission.

The statement shows that the delegation will meet senior representatives of the government, including minister for Water and Irrigation Isack Kamwelwe, minister for Energy Dr Medard Kalemani, Bank of Tanzania (BoT) governor Prof Florens Luoga and ministry of Finance and Planning permanent secretary Doto James.

“The delegation will also visit the Aga Khan Dar es Salaam Hospital, which benefits from a loan amounting to $53.5 million for health service. This support pursues the goal to build 30 outreach centres in the country,” it stated.

The delegation will also endorse an agreement to finance the Morogoro water supply and sanitation project, which stands at €70 million, which is equivalent to Sh186 billion as concessional loan.

“The Morogoro Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (Moruwasa) will be the implementing agency, which will aim at increasing drinking water production by doubling the existing capacities and securing the water resources and enhancing the water distribution system with a focus on poor people,” it stated.

The project will also serve Morogoro’s population by expanding the existing sewerage network and improve the access to sanitation infrastructures. An important focus will be made on the strengthening of Moruwasa’s capacity.

The project will also help identify sources that will satisfy the Morogoro water demand by 2030.

From 2008 to 2016, the projects supported by AFD in the country hit €435 million, which is equivalent to Sh1 trillion.

Billions of money from AFD have facilitated improvement of water services in Mwanza, Bukoba and Musoma municipalities.
