Farmers blamed for not following expert advice

According to authorities, the failure by farmers in the region to follow advice from farming experts is one of the major factors behind the region’s failure to meet its target of producing 600,000 tonnes of food crops.

Mwanza. The region has produced only 400,000 tonnes of food crops this year against the projected 600,000 tonnes, it has been revealed.

Speaking on behalf of Mwanza Regional Administrative Secretary Clodwing Mtweve regional agriculture officer Innocent Keya, said on Sunday that the region will have to purchase food to cover the deficit.

According to the agriculture officer, the failure by farmers to follow advice from farming experts is one of the major factors behind the region’s failure to meet its target of producing 600,000 tonnes of food crops.

“Farmers must comply with instructions from agricultural experts in their respective areas if they are to curb food shortage, taking into consideration that some areas in our region received less rainfall throughout the year,” said Mr Keya.

He advised people to use their food wisely and refrain from making the local brew that is of little benefit to anyone.

A farmer in Kwimba District Ms Suzy Gwanchele, said extension officers don’t offer any advice whatsoever to the people.
