Judiciary moves to speed up grand corruption cases

Last month, the government tabled a Bill seeking to enact a law that will establish a special court for handling grand corruption and economic sabotage cases.

Arusha. The newly established special Corruption and Economic Crime Court will have open registries in every zone said Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman.

 The move is aimed at speeding up the hearing of corruption cases country-wide.

Justice Othman said this during his recent visit to the courts in the northern zone regions of Arusha, Manyara and Kilimanjaro adding that that the main registry will be in Dar es Salaam.

The minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Mr Harrison Mwakyembe, said recently the government was finalising arrangements to pave way for the establishment of a special court to deal with economic crime and corruption cases.

Last month, the government tabled a Bill seeking to enact a law that will establish a special court for handling grand corruption and economic sabotage cases. It will be set up through amendments of the Economic and Organised Crime Control Act.

According to the proposed amendments, the new court will have the jurisdiction to hear and determine cases involving, among other issues, corruption and economic offences whose value is not less than Sh8 billion.
