Women educated on food security

According to Care International representatives the project played a vital role in assisting women farmers access markets for their produce.

Mtwara. More than 600 women in Lindi and Mtwara regions have benefited from a five-year project to improve livelihoods dubbed WE-RISE (Women’s Empowerment: Improving Resilience, Income and Food Security).

The project was implemented by Care International through sponsorship from the Australia-Africa Community Engagement Scheme (AACES).

Care International project officer Daniel Katebalila: “The project played a vital role in helping farmers access markets for their produce; we connected them to some companies like Mohamed Enterprises and Export Trading Co Ltd.”

Speaking to The Citizen, a project beneficiary from Lindi, Ms Mwanaafa Mponda, said, “Through the use of improved varieties and application of modern agronomic practices my yields increased abundantly. This year, I have harvested 260 kilogrammes of sesame seeds from one acre a great improvement from 50 kilogrammes the previous season.”
