TZ lags behind in implementing gender equality

Dar es Salaam. Despite several strides in implementing gender equality, Tanzania continues to perform dismally compared to other East Africa Community (EAC) states in implementing gender equality strategies. 

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tanzania is ranked fourth in EAC's maternal mortality ranking after Burundi, Kenya and Uganda.

Ms Elizabeth Ampairwe, the Eastern African Sub-regional Support Initiative for the Advancement of Women (EASSI) coordinator, cited at weak institutional frameworks and systems for holding governments accountable as major factors behind failure by many countries to mainstream gender equality policies.
