Dar es Salaam. President John Magufuli on Friday sent a strong message to Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) members that they should prepare themselves for party cleansing.

He warned that corrupt elements would be purged. Dr Magufuli was addressing party members who received him at the CCM Sub-Head Office along Lumumba Street here.

He jetted into Dar es Salaam after his tour of five regions:  Singida, Tabora, Geita, Shinyanga and Mwanza and a short leave at his Chato home in Geita.

It was the first reception there since he became the ruling party’s national chairman.

He warned that those who are used to buying leadership should not even think of picking up nomination forms during the next year’s party elections.

“Those who bribe members to get votes should think of doing other businesses rather than politics. They won’t be elected under my leadership,” he vowed.

He said since he got the party presidential nomination without bribing anyone, he would ensure that those aspiring for leadership realise their goals on merit.

He said he would not spare any unqualified or corrupt party leader or member.

Dr Magufuli said after weeding out corrupt elements he would turn to the party property. “I’ll ensure that party assets are used for the benefit of CCM and not for a few individuals.”

He promised to conduct an audit of all party projects to establish how they are run, how much they generate and how the money is being spent.

Dr Magufuli wondered why CCM and its wings were complaining about financial difficulties while they had a lot of investments.

“This is a well-established party. How can we ask for assistance from well-wishers even during by-elections?”

He also wondered where all the money collected from CCM and its wing investments go to.

He said given the massive investments, it was a shame for CCM not to have its own television station.
