Moshi. Local leaders in Mwanga District, Kilimanjaro Region are at  risk of  losing their jobs if they fail to stop illegal fishing at Nyumba ya Mungu Dam.

Regional commissioner Said Mecky Sadik made the announcement while briefing journalists on the recent ban of fishing from the dam.

He noted that fishing should be halted for one year to allow the fish population to regenerate:

“Village ward leaders and fisheries officers are partly to blame for continued illegal fishing in the water body."

The regional boss added that local leaders' salaries will also be slashed  if they fail to enforce the ban.
