Dar es Salaam. Former Chadema presidential flag bearer Edward Lowassa has urged the party to ensure that it gets strong support at the grassroots so that it would stand the chance of unseating CCM in the 2020 elections.

The former Prime Minister, who is also a member of Chadema Central Committee, made the remarks during the opening of the Chadema youth wing (Bavicha) meeting here yesterday.

“The party must be strengthened from the grassroots. You can’t win an election with votes from urban dwellers only. You also need votes from rural areas where the majority people live,” said Mr Lowassa.

He also criticised President John Magufuli for his choice of regional and district commissioners as well as district executive directors.

“President Magufuli has appointed CCM cadres without considering their abilities,” he said.

In his welcoming remarks, Bavicha chairman Patrobas Katambi said the two-day meeting would, among other things, discuss the state of democracy in the country.

He said  the democratic environment had deteriorated.
