47 firms obtain licences to purchase cashew

Mtwara. Some 47 out of 76 firms which applied for licenses to purchase cashew in this season have been successful.

The licensed firms will be liable to buy cashew across the country in 2017/2018 season.

In the 2015/2016 buying season, a total of 54 firms were issued with licences to purchase the crop compared to 2016/2017 buying season where 66 firms were issued with licences.

This was revealed on Wednesday October 18 by the Cashewnut Board of Tanzania (CBT) acting Direcrtor, Mr Hassan Jarufu, when briefing journalists on the official opening of cashew auction for the 2017/2018 season.

Clarifying, he said 43 of the companied have been licensed to purchase and export raw cashew while the remaining four firms have been licensed for local cashew processing.

He added that under the prevailing rules, a company might be given both liecenses depending on the needs.

He called upon the licensed buyers of raw cashews this season to effectively take part in auction by observing the laws, regulations and guidelines put in place for purchasing the crop.
