No change recorded in cassava, potato prices

Dar es Salaam. Prices of potatoes and cassava have remained stable despite of increased demands of the commodity in a time when Muslims and on fasting seasons.
The Citizen survey in various city markets including Tandale, Ilala, Buguruni and Kariakoo established that wholesale prices for 100 kilo-bag of sweet potato remains at Sh70,000 on Friday 18 May the same as that of April 6, this year.
At the same time a sack of 60 kilo of Cassava was sold at Sh50,000 on Friday last week, the same prices experienced the whole last month.
Retail prices for a kilo of sweet potatoes remained at a constant price of Sh1500 while two to four pieces of cassava are also sold at Sh1,000 and 1,500.
Tandale market Chairperson Mr Mohamed Mwekaya attributed that price stability is a result of increase in supply, following bumper crops harvests in parts of Dar es Salaam as well as Coast and Morogoro regions.
“There is large supply of supply of cassava and sweet potatoes in the market” he said, adding that many farmers were targeting the Holy Month.
The chairperson expects the prices to remain stable up to the end of next months.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture; Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Cassava and sweet potatoes were the major crop among root and tuber group of crops in Tanzania.
