Airtel donates Sh15m science textbooks to Mbeya schools

Mbeya. Airtel has donated science books worth Sh15 million to fine Mbeya secondary schools as a way of empowering education sector in the country.

The books were donated in collaboration with Tulia Ackson Foundation to Ikuti, Kayuki, Bujeli, Taba and Ikupa secoindary schools during a brief ceremony held in Mbeya.

Speaking during the handover, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Deputy Dr Tulia Ackson commended Airtel for collaborating with her foundation to assist the schools.

“Government alone cannot do everything and private sector contribution is essential to ensure vibrant and productive education sector,” she said.

She said the country has witnessed gaps and scarcity of schooling material in most secondary schools noting for instance that current book ratio stands at 1 book per 5 students.

“We are certain this donation will contribute to production skilled workface which can also serve the private sector,” she noted.

For his part, Airtel Mbeya Sales Manager, Bartholomew Masatu said the company believes that educated society arises from institutions that have adequate resources, especially books.

“We cannot talk of development if there is no education. Our commitment demonstrated today compliments the need for school to have adequate material to boost students’ academic achievement,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of her colleagues, Kayuki Secondary headmistress, Ms Bertha Sarufu, urged students to use the books for intended purposes.
