Okra prices down over high supply

Dar es Salaam. The wholesale and retail prices of okra have declined by almost three times during the past two months, a report from the Kariakoo Market Corporation has shown

The price of okra, which is mainly cultivated in Morogoro and Coast regions, increased during the months of June and July, whereby the wholesale price ranged between Sh130,000 and Sh140,000.

In the past two months, retail prices ranged between Sh2500 and Sh3000 per kilogram, but they have fallen to Sh1,400 and Sh1,500 per kilogram.

Currently at Kariakoo market the wholesale price for 50 kilo bags range between Sh45,000 and Sh60,000.

Speaking to The Citizen yesterday, a statistician from Kariakoo market Mr Shanyangi Deogratius said currently the market supply for okra was high, which led to a decrease in its price.

“Currently it’s a seasonal of okra and heap-tomato so there is a lot of burden and this is more profitable for the last consumers,” he said

He said at Kariakoo market there are lot of okra which comes from farmers in Morogoro and Coast regions which is good.

A resident at Buguruni Mary Massawe said “I tend to eat okra juice for my health because it helps a lot of things in my body and especially at my old age, but I do not have enough information about the price going down because I am normal brought up from my brother who own a small farm in Gongo la Mboto,”
