Musoma. The women’s wing of the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), known as UWT, has promised to join the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in the country as part of their efforts to liberate women and enable them to participate fully in development.

In an interview with The Citizen on Friday, December 15, UWT national chairperson Gaudensia Kabaka said there was no way sustainable development would be attained if women still fell victim to GBV.

She said women had great contribution to the economy of their families and the nation at large and joint efforts were needed to find lasting solutions to challenges, such as GBV, that hindered women’s participation in development.

Ms Kabaka said tackling GBV was part of UWT’s work plan. She noted that the ruling party’s wing would cooperate with other stakeholders including the police gender desk, to end GBV.

“We are going to work closely with other activists, including the police to help women get their rights as they deserve,” she said.

She said UWT intended to serve all women in the country regardless of their political, religions and tribal affiliations.

Some UWT members have also spoken in one voice against GBV, insisting that it indeed hinders women’s development and denies them the rights they deserve.
