Competition of EJAT 2016 now takes off

Dar es Salaam. The Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzania (EJAT) organising committee yesterday launched the 2016 competition involving 19 categories, three less than the 2015 which featured 22 groups.

EJAT organising committee chairman Kajubi Mukajanga told reporters here that journalists are invited to submit their works that had been aired or published between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2016, starting November 15, 2016 to January 31, 2017.

He said this year the awards that commenced in 2009 aimed at recognising and awarding outstanding work in journalism would feature into two new categories; Data Journalism (DJ) and Gender, Elderly and Children.

“Awards will be presented to winners at a gala night slated for April 28, 2017. The overall winner will be offered scholarship worth Sh3 million to pursue journalism studies of his preference,” he said.

“Winners in individual categories will be awarded trophies, certificates and prizes, including laptops, cameras, voice recorders and tablets,” he added.

According to Mr Mukajanga, the sixth Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award (LAJA) will also be presented to a person among candidates with impressive track record of excellence in journalism who have shown strong support and commitment for excellence in press freedom.

He named categories as: Business, Economy and Finance reporting, Culture and Sports, Health reporting, Agriculture and Agri-business reporting, Education reporting, News and Current Affairs reporting, Tourism and Conservation reporting and Sexual and Reproductive Health of Young People reporting.

Other categories are: Public Procurement reporting, Taxation and Revenue Collection reporting, Investigative reporting, Data Journalism, Human Rights and Good Governance reporting, Best Photojournalist, Best Cameraman, Best Editorial Cartoonist, HIV/AIDS reporting, Gender, Elderly and Children reporting and open category.

In running EJAT 2016, organising committee was collaborating with the Tanzania Media Foundation (TMF) and the Institute of Southern Africa-Tanzania Chapter (Misa-Tan).
