Dar es Salaam. The chairman of the Democratic Party, the Reverend Christopher Mtikila, has filed a petition at the High Court against the introduction of the Kadhi Court in Tanzania.

In the petition filed yesterday, the Rev Mtikila, among other things, is seeking the court’s declaration that the Kadhi Court and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) are illegal in Tanzania, particularly within the boundaries of what he described as Tanganyika.

He also wants the court to order Prime Minister Mizengo Pinga, Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs Asha-Rose Migiro, Attorney General George Masaju and others to show why they should not be jailed for not less than five years each for blatantly violating the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land.

He says all citizens of Tanganyika are equal and should not be discriminated against on the basis of religion, adding that the sanctity of human life should be upheld.

The Rev Mtikila says in his petition that the State has no authority to involve itself in matters such as the establishment of the Kadhi Court or membership of Islamic and other religious organisations.
