Morogoro. CCM secretary general Dr Bashiru Ally has used a jubilee celebration by farmers to drum up support for President John Magufuli and the ruling party.

Dr Bashiru told the meeting of a network of farmer groups called ‘Mviwata’ to support CCM so that it could continue remaining in power.

"I’m here to do political work…first, I have been sent by our chairman President Magufuli to thank you for inviting him as the chief guest at your celebrations," he said, noting that the Head of State could not make it due to a change in schedule following the recent MV Nyerere ferry accident in which 228 people perished.

"The president thanks you all for supporting him. He is pleased you are rallying behind him," said Dr Bashiru to applause from the delegates, some of whom were in CCM party regalia.

He said the party’s job was to keep defending farmers, explaining that they should not accept to be defended by anybody else.

"CCM is the party for farmers and workers and it still stands for the Arusha declaration and the Zanzibar revolution. It arrests exploiters, thieves, those misappropriating public funds and teaching them a lesson," said Dr Bashiru who was named to the position not long ago.

However, he said CCM would not remain in power if it was not supported by the farmers.

The celebrations, whose chief guest was Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa representing President Magufuli, took place on Wednesday October 3, at the Jamhuri Stadium in Morogoro.

The other dignitaries, who attended the celebrations included Agriculture Minister Dr Charles Tizeba, his deputy Omar Mgumba, Land and Human Settlements Development Deputy Minister Angelina Mabula, ambassadors and regional leaders.
