Foreign geologists set to study Kagera quakes

The Minister for Energy and Minerals, Prof Sospeter Muhongo, said Murungu Village would become a site for studying underground rocks and earthquake incidents.

Bukoba. A team of geologists from Japan and England will arrive in the country soon to study the cause of the September 10 earthquake in Kagera Region.

The Minister for Energy and Minerals, Prof Sospeter Muhongo, said the international geologists will work together with local experts.

The minister made the remarks on Wednesday at the Regional Commissioner’s office after visiting Murungu Village and urged authorities in the region to mount a memorable symbol to mark the incident.

Professor Muhongo said Murungu Village would become a site for studying underground rocks and earthquake incidents.

In a related development over 140 residents in Minziro Village whose houses were destroyed by tremors said they had not received any assistance from the government.

Kagera Regional Commisoner Major (rtd) Salum Kijuu said at least 20 billion is required to reconstruct government institutions damaged by the quake.
