Gender activists urge govt to improve life of rural girls

Dodoma. Tanzania will have to do more to empower women and girls in rural settings before it realises its dream of becoming a middle-income economy, a gender activist group has said.

The DIA, an NGO fighting gender-based violence, said on Tuesday women and girls in rural settings were still left on the sidelines of economic activity.  

“Many studies we conducted in rural areas in the Central Zone established that some communities deny girls access to education,” said the NGO’s executive director Jenipher Chiute.

She said most young girls in rural areas were also still being married off due to poverty and are subjected to various forms of abuse.

Dodoma regional social welfare officer Anna Gelle said empowering young girls in rural areas remained a huge challenge in the country.
