Half a million raised for Kagera quake victims

Mbeya. The Muslim community in Mbeya region has raised Sh500,000 for earthquake victims in Kagera Region.

Speaking to The Citizen on Tuesday, the Secretary of Imams in the region, Mr Abdallah Yondu, said the money was raised during Idd-ul-Adha prayers held on Monday. He commended those who had made donations, and appealed to other Muslims as well as wananchi in the region at large, to make donations for the victims.

Mr Yondu remarked: “We should heed to the saying that ‘A friend in need is a friend indeed’.  Just as our compatriots were hit by the earthquake, we don’t know what will happen to us tomorrow.”

The Saturday earthquake killed at least 17 people and 253 others suffered injuries.

According to the Geological Survey of Tanzania the quake, had a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale. 

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the tremor was at Nsunga near Lake Victoria.

It further noted that the depth of the tremor was recorded as 10km and happened at 12.27am, 29km north east of Kyaka, 41km north of Katoro, and 43km North West of Bukoba town. Its effect was felt across the Lake Zone regions of Mwanza, Musoma, Shinyanga and Musoma as well as Kakamega in Western Kenya and Kampala in Uganda.
