Home Affairs ministry forms marine force to control illegal fishing

Geita. The ministry of Home Affairs has formed a marine force that will help control crime and illegal fishing in Lake Victoria.

Home Affairs deputy minister Hamad Masauni said this during his tour of inspection of police housing units in Chato District that are under construction. He said the plan was aimed at controlling not only security, but also illegal activities along the shores of and in Lake Victoria.

“Already we have taken a mobile police boat there that will strengthen surveillance and carry officers quickly to crime scenes. However, we continue to make efforts in acquiring another patrol boat,” said Masauni, who also congratulated traders, through their association, on launching a construction project on 100 police housing units in Geita Town.

He also explained that the government had decided to support efforts being made by security and defence stakeholders to construct police houses in different parts of the country after providing Sh10 billion to counter a shortage of police houses.

Geita Regional Police Commander Mponjoli Mwabulambo said the region with a total number of 1, 045 police officers was in need of 1, 200 houses for the law enforcers, explaining that most of them were living in civilian areas hence causing inconveniences when needing them during emergency incidents.
