Human Rights body condemns arrest of lawyer, four clients ordered by RC Mnyeti

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRD-Coalition) has condemned the arresting of advocate Menrad D’Souza and his four clients.
The advocate D’Souza and his four clients who are workers of Balton Ltd were arrested on July 30, 2018 and put under police custody for 48 hours before they were set free on Tuesday.
The directive to arrest them was issued by Manyara Regional Commissioner Mr Alexander Mnyeti.
Speaking to journalists at a press conference on Thursday, August 1, 2018, THRDC coordinator Mr Onesmo Olengurumwa accused the police force of denying judicial functions.
He said that the advocates were exercising their legal duties in compliance with the country’s laws, urging the government to stop interfering the judicial functions.
“There is a need to condemn these kind of unlawful acts against legal officers otherwise the citizens will also be denied to access their legal rights,” he said.
Commenting further on judiciary systems in the country, Mr Olengurumwa further called on legal officers to unite and preach about good governance and rule of law.
Meanwhile, Mr Olengurumwa urged regional and district commissioners to adhere to the country’s laws when exercising their national duties in efforts to stop regular occurrence of unlawful acts in the country.
