Lobby rolls out mobile legal service

By Sturmius Mtweve, The Citizen Reporter

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Women Layers Association (Tawla) has launched a toll free mobile legal aid service to improve access to justice.

The organisation, with the capacity of providing legal assistance to about 10,000 people per year, has resolved to introduce the service after learning that many women lack access and assistance to legal services due to various factors.

Now, through calling 0800751010 and 0800110017 –the toll free lines, women will have access to prompt legal advices, guidance on self-representation as well as referrals to other organisations, paralegals or lawyers depending on the nature of their cases.

Speaking at the launch of the “Toll free line services” yesterday, Ms Aisha Bade, Tawla chairperson said, “People are not able to access justice when they need to. This is one of the major causes for human rights violations, with women being the major victims.”

Ms Bade said, the newly launched initiative aims at ensuring access to justice by bringing services closer to the people –an important step towards guaranteeing legal rights to vulnerable women in the country.

“These lines will be useful to clients as they will be attended by trained advocates specifically recruited for this work... They will not only receive firsthand information but also get professional legal advice,” she said.
