This was said by the deputy minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Damas Ndumbaro, when briefing journalists on the day in Dar es Salaam today, Tuesday, October 23.

Dr Ndumbaro said this year's celebration will take place at the Karimjee grounds in the city.

"The Prime Minister is expected to grace the commemoration. In attendance will also be representatives of international missions as well as members of the public.

This year's celebrations will focus on youth, in line with the theme: 'Youth Empowerment and Innovation for Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).’

"The government and the UN are promoting active participation by youth in implementation of the Second National Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP II) and the SDGs," he said.

He also said the government has been working with the UN on matters related to maintaining peace, societal development and economic conditions of citizens in the country.

"This year's theme for the 73-year anniversary encourages the youth to actively participate in the national and international development agenda by embarking on innovative ways of income generation," he said.

He further said that the government in collaboration with the UN would continue to facilitate capacity building activities for the youth who are considered the workforce of the nation.

For his part, UN resident coordinator Alvaro Rodriguez commended the government of Tanzania's commitment to becoming an industrialised, middle-income economy by 2025, stressing that the youth were crucial to achieving this goal.

"Youth need to take ownership of SDGs. The SDGs are not the responsibility of the UN or the government, they require everyone's action," he said.

He further said that, "the SDGs call for leaving no one behind and as we celebrate UN Day, let's reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that all in this country have opportunities to participate in implementation of FYDP II and the SDGs," he said.

The UN started its operations on October 24, 1945, making it 73 years since its establishment. Every year, the government and UN in Tanzania jointly commemorate UN Day in partnership with the international community and other stakeholders.
