Unconfirmed reports said a prominent businessman, Mr Yusuf manji, was also set free yesterday evening.

Dar es Salaam. Police yesterday released Bishop Josephat Gwajima, who was being held at the Central Police Station for questioning over drug abusing and dealing.

Unconfirmed reports said a prominent businessman, Mr Yusuf manji, was also set free yesterday evening.

Mr Manji and Bishop Gwajima were put under arrest last Thursday after they reported for questioning in response to a call by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda. They were named among 65 people and institutions which are allegedly dealing in narcotics or abusing them.

Bishop Gwajima left the police station in the evening in the company of his followers.

Though police were tight lipped over the release, witnesses told The Citizen that Bishop Gwajima left in a car which was escorted by another vehicle.

Checks at his church found followers celebrating after being informed that their leader has been set free.

However, it could not be immediately established if they were released on bail or the police didn’t find evidence to incriminate them.

After they were detained on Thursday, they were taken to the Chief Government Chemist laboratory for tests.

Afterwards, they were taken to their homes and offices for inspection. There is no word on the outcome of the tests and the investigations, but Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commander Simon Sirro was quoted as saying that the tests and inspections were part of the investigation process.

In another development, Mr Makonda has started to meet some of people who have been listed as drug abusers, including artistes.

Yesterday, he met with famous Bongo Flava artiste, Khalid Mohamed alias TID. The artiste was among people who were named by Mr Makonda last week. He is also among those who have been put under police watch for one year by a city court.

In his instagram account, Mr Makonda posted a picture he took with TID captioned: “Our God is not asleep and he likes you to look for Him, welcome home TID”.

The same picture appeared on the TID instagram page with a caption; “Music without drugs is possible.”
