Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) has clarified today that Jomo Kenyatta University College of Technology was one of the universities that were barred from admitting new students since the 2017/18 academic year.

Speaking to The Citizen on Wednesday, 26 September 26, 2018, TCU executive secretary, Prof Charles Kihampa, said the college failed to meet laid down requirements.

“Some Universities, which were barred from admitting students in the 2017/18 academic year had been given time to fulfill requirements but they failed to do so,” said Prof Kihampa.

“We’ll continue to inspect universities to find out how they have fully implemented our recommendations…we will base our decisions on the level of their implementation,” he said.

TCU allowed Jkuat to continue offering courses for the remaining students but blocked the institution from admitting new ones for the 2017/2018 academic year.

The university, together with Kenyatta University, which was also barred from admitting new students, were also criticised by Kenya’s Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for establishing campuses outside the country without following due process.

In 2017, Jkuat announced plans to close down its Tanzania campus, days after it was stopped from admitting students.

Acting Vice-Chancellor Paul Wainaina told the Daily Nation that the university was closing the Arusha campus in compliance with a Kenyan government order.

“We received instructions on the same and KU is already working on closing the campus,” Prof Wainaina said.
