Dodoma. Konde Member of Parliament (CUF) Khatib Said Haji has commended Finance and Planning, Dr Philip Mpango, on the way he handled the confusion surrounding 20 containers belonging to Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda.

The 20 containers, meant for Dar es Salaam teachers’ offices that were built under a special campaign spearheaded by Mr Makonda, have been subjected to an auction by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) after tax exemption applications were dropped by respective authorities.

Debating the Bill to amend the Public Private Partnership Act of 2018, on Wednesday, September 12, Mr Khatib encouraged the minister to tighten the rope to ensure justice prevails.

“He had met many leaders, but today he met a stumbling block… these are the kind of leaders that are greatly needed by President Magufuli,” he said.

However, he defended the decision by opposition Members of Parliament to vote against the budget, noting that the system of endorsing it provided no opportunity for a description to be given on issues supported and those opposed.

“The budget contains issues we support and those we don’t. You are not doing fair to conclude that constituencies under the opposition should be denied development projects because they rejected the budget,” he said, adding: “For instance, we opposed Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on the Zanzibar Electrical Corporation (Zeco), something which was ignored, instead the budget was passed.”
