NHC intends to cash in on shift to Dodoma

Dar es Salaam. The National Housing Corporation (NHC) expects to construct 500 houses over the next twelve months following the government’s decision to move the capital to Dodoma.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, NHC Director General Nehemiah Mchechu said his institution has already purchased land in Chamwino, Bahi and Chemba districts. NHC expects to build between 300 and 500 houses.
Mr Mchechu explained that the projects are expected to cost over Sh60 billion that would be obtained from existing property sales and cash collections from chronic debtors.
“As builders, we are targeting both the private and public sectors. We are going to Dodoma to build houses. So far, we have put up 153 structures, some of which have already been sold. We are also constructing 44 houses in Kongwa District and already we have bought 236 acres of land in the peripherals of the University of Dodoma, where we are building satellite projects like the ones at Kawe and Arusha,” Mchechu said.
He explained further: “Besides selling houses, we are trailing Sh14.5 billion in debts from the public and private sectors. The debts must be settled as soon as possible and we have already issued a notification to that effect.”
