Dar es Salaam. Opposition Member of Parliament Tundu Lissu is to spend the night in the police cell after he was remanded pending a formal charge tomorrow over remarks he made about the president on Tuesday.
Mr Lissu who was being interrogated at the Central Police Station since late afternoon was taken to the basement cells about an hour ago.
His lawyers and close associates told The Citizen that the police said they will continue to hold the MP as they were not done with investigations.
Mr Lissu who is the main opposition party, Chadema, Chief Whip and MP for Singida East was summoned to the station over remarks he made shortly after he was charged with incitement at the High Court. He was enjoined in a case facing the owner of a local tabloid and a publisher.
After appearing before the court, Mr Lissu addressed the media and accused President John Magufuli of being a dictator. He branded the president a petty dictator. (“dictator uchwara”).
It is believed he was summoned to the police station over the remarks. There was tension around the station the entire day as opposition supporters jammed the area.
