PCCB issues Sh10 million Prize for arrest of official

The Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) has announced a Sh10 reward to any person who will provide information that will facilitate the arrest its former accountant Mr Godfrey Gugai who is accused of abuse of office.

PCCB deputy director general Brigadier Gen. John Mbungo told reporters on Tuesday, November 14 that the accountant is accused of using his office to accumulate excessive wealth.

"We started questioning Mr Gugai if you remember reports issued in May this year. But, he disappeared after failing to substantiate how acquired the wealth at his disposal. Reports indicate that he has gone into exile," he said.

According to Brigadier Gen Mbungo, the PCCB former accountant is accused of possessing two buildings with three and four storey buildings respectively in Dar es Salaam.

Also, he said the officer was in possession of five other residential buildings including apartments built in Dar es Salaam, Mwanza and Musoma

“Mr Gugai is accused of possessing 34 plots in Dar es Salaam, Coast, Tanga, Arusha, Mara Morogoro, Dodoma and Mwanza Regions, which the PCCB is convinced beyond reasonable doubt that they belonged to him,” he said.

"Tanzanians are not restricted by law to possess wealth and property but the law doesn’t allow public servants to use their position to acquire such wealth. We need to question Mr Gugai, he is supposed to justify his acquisitions to the PCCB,” he said.

He said PCCB had lodged application in court prohibiting Mr GUgai from developing or shifting property ownership until when the issue is permanently resolved in accordance to the law.

“Tanzanians should cooperate with PCCB by providing information as the anti-corruption body is keeping eyes wide open against all forms of corruption including abuse of office, smuggling government trophies and money laundering.

When asked on orders issued by Natural Resources and Tourism minister Dr Hamisi Kigwangalla that PCCB should launch investigations on former minister in the his docket Lazaro Nyalandu, Brigadier Gen Mbungo said PCCB has learnt the issue through parliament sessions and various media outlets.
