Parliament refutes Mbowe claims on Lissu treatment funds

What you need to know:

Only hours after Chadema national chairman, Freeman Mbowe accused the Parliament of withholding Sh43 million contributed by law makers for Tundu Lissu treatment, the law making organ has refused the reports saying the money has already paid into the Nairobi Hospital account.

In a press conference which Mr Mbowe singled out security organs as their number one suspect in Lissu attacks, he also accused Speaker of the National Assembly of ‘pocketing’ the money which MPs contributed from their sitting allowances for Lissu treatment.

But in a quick rejoinder, the Parliament issued a statement saying the money has already been paid into the Nairobi hospital account, contrary to Mr Mbowe’s assertions.

Parliament said in a statement that the money was deposited into the account on September 20. The statement said further that the delay to deposit the money was caused by the delay by the hospital to provide the Parliament office with account particulars as well as processing the money for international transfer.

“We would like the public to be informed that the said money was deposited into Hospitals account at Barclays bank account number 0451155318 namely Kenya Hospital Association at the Hurlringham branch since September 20,” reads the statement.

The money, amounting to Sh43 million was raised by MP’s after they agreed to contribute half of their one day sitting allowance to support medical care of Mr Lissu who was shot by the unknown assailants in Dodoma on 7 September.

“The money could have been transferred early but we were in the process to get the right bank account and compile to the international procedures of transferring money,” the statement reads further.

Earlier Friday, September 22 at a press conference held in the city, Chadema national chairman Freeman Mbowe said some Sh204 million has been raised for Lissu treatment.
