Dar es Salaam. The police have refuted claims that it is holding three people suspected to be Kenyan National Security Intelligence Service (NSIS) officials.

The officials are said to have arrived in Zanzibar to trace the movements of Kenyan National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader Raila Odinga, who is claimed to be in Zanzibar for a private tour.

Speaking to The Citizen on November 23, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Simon Sirro said his office wasn’t aware of the arrest of any NSIS officials from the neighbour country.

“I’m not aware of that and what is being speculated about is not true,” said Mr Sirro in a telephone interview.

The Kenyan senior politician is believed to be in Zanzibar since Monday. However, the government of Zanzibar maintains that it has no information about his arrival.

“We haven’t received any information about his presence. However, we are following up the rumours of his presence,” said Mjini Magharibi regional police commander Hassan Nasir Ali.

Mr Odinga, a former Kenyan Prime Minister, lost in the 2017 General Election held in August and pulled out of the rerun election held on October 26, this year, after the Supreme Court annulled the August presidential election results and ordered the rerun election.

He appealed, but the Supreme Court on Monday upheld Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory.
