The Clerk of National Assembly Dr Thomas Kashillilah has announced that the election to fill the two remaining posts for members of East African Legislative Assembly (Eala) will be conducted on May 10.

In a statement published in the Government Gazette on its April 21 edition, the nomination for the two seats allocated for opposition Chadema will be conducted in May 3.

“On 4th April, 2017 the National Assembly of Tanzania conducted an election to elect Nine (9) Members who shall represent the United Republic of Tanzania to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA). In that election, the Assembly elected Six (6) Members from Chama Cha Mapindunzi (CCM) and One (1) Member from the Civic United Front-CUF. The other two Seats which were reserved for Chadema Candidates are vacant since the Candidates got few YES votes and thus could not succeed,” reads Dr Kashillilah’s announcement in part.

In order to fill the two vacant seats, the Assembly is required to conduct an election to elect the two members from the respective group of which Chadema is the only Party entitled to field candidates.
