Pwani. Road accidents in Coast Region have significantly dropped from 383 to 86 accidents between January and October 2016 and Between January and October 2017 respectively.

Speaking during the summit of Road Safety Week in Kibaha District on Monday, December 4, acting regional traffic commander Salumu Moromori said the rise in fines had been attributed to frequent patrols and driving and vehicle inspection.
He named challenges facing the enforcement of road traffic regulations as poor road infrastructure against increased number of vehicles and ignorance of the Road Safety Act.
For his part, Kibaha tax drivers chairman Rogatus Haule said reluctance of owners to decorate their cars for identification purposes was the main challenge facing their business.
Guest of honour, regional commissioner Evarist Ndikilo commended efforts made by the traffic police in reducing the road accidents in the region and called upon citizens to cooperate with them.
"Citizens especially motorcyclists should continue cooperating with the traffic police in mitigating road accidents. Allowing the motorcyclists to operate after short courses should stop with immediate effect because it aggravates the road accidents problem in the region,” he said.
