Dar es Salaam.  More than Sh346.6 million has been collected as fines in a cleanup campaign administered by regional commissioner Paul Makonda.

Speaking during a public meeting, Mr Makonda said 6,577 people were charged with failure to keep their environment clean.

According to him, of 11,669 people apprehended, and six of them were taken to court.

"It was not our intention to collect the money. Our aim was to emphasise the importance of cleaning our surroundings, “he said.

He condemned unethical actions of some implementers of the campaign, who have been beating up people.

"Such people have been taken to court.”
