Elite runners gear up for 2018 Mt Meru Marathon

Arusha. Preparations for the fourth edition of Mt. Meru Marathon are in top gear. Slated for September 30, the 21 kilometre race will start and end at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium, Arusha’s main sports arena.

A record of 2,500 runners will take part in the competition, according to the organising committee chairman, Alfred Mollel.

“Some of the competitors will come from outside the country,” Mollel said yesterday.

“Mt. Meru Marathon is now one of the much known athletic races in the East African region,” he said, adding that efforts are being made to improve its standard.

Mollel said registration of the competitors has been underway for sometime, mostly done on-line.

A local wine maker, Banana Investment Limited is among the sponsors of the event. The others are Bonite Bottlers and Sunrise Radio, an FM radio station based here. According to him, there would be three groups of runners; men, women and kids. Besides the 21 km race, other runners will cover 10km and 5km for the children. (Bertha Ismail)
