Dar es Salaam. Kenya and Rwanda will field teams in this year’s BQ tennis tournament scheduled for November 25-26 at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, it has been revealed.

Sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the championship will see players compete in junior and wheelchair categories, according to the club’s tennis section secretary general, Sanjay Chokshi.

Chokshi said on Thursday that the door was still open to other countries wishing to compete in the tournament.

“Rwanda and Kenya have confirmed their participation in this year’s BQ Championship. Uganda, Burundi and South Sudan have shown interest in fielding teams in the event but have yet to confirm,” Chokshi said.

In the wheelchair category, teams will battle it out for tittles in the ladies’ singles, ladies’ doubles, men’s singles and men’s doubles, according to the organisers of the annual tournament.

The junior category will involve the under-14 players. They will compete in the girls’ and boys’ disciplines. The Under-18 players will also compete in the tournament. Local players are currently training at the Gymkhana Club ahead of the billed to be tough but exciting event. “My players have been responding positively to my instructions. I am optimistic that we will shine in the championship,” the wheelchair team coach, Salum Riziki, said yesterday. He said three players who represented Tanzania in the recently ended Rwanda Open, will also take part in the event. They returned home early this week from Kigali, where they claimed titles in the women’s and men’s wheelchair finals in the Rwanda Open.

Meanwhile, three tennis players, who are Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club members, leave for Rwanda today for the Inter-Clubs Social tournament, which roars into life tomorrow.

The two-day tournament will also feature players from Nigeria, according to Chokshi.
