Dar es Salaam. Over 150 golfers are expected to compete in the Lugalo Open Championship roaring into life on April 8 at the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Club.

Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) chairman Joseph Tango said yesterday that preparations for the two-day championship were on course. Tango said they will use the event to select golfers who would form the national youth team for various international competitions, including this year’s Africa Junior Championship.

“A number of youngsters are now training at Lugalo, Morogoro and Arusha Gymkhana Clubs ahead of the Africa Junior golf championship,” said Tango.

“We’ll unveil a provisional squad for the continental championship after the Lugalo Open Championship, which will feature more than 150 golfers from various clubs across the country,” he said. Tango said their decision to establish training programmes for young golfers aims at increasing the number of the golfers in the country as well as promoting the sport.

He said the provisional squad would comprise 20 golfers who would undergo special training in a region to be named later.

The golfers will later be trimmed down to 10, who will represent the country in various continental championships this year.

Golfers will battle it out for top honours in various categories during the 36-hole Lugalo event.
