Government lauds ladies national golf team

Dar es Salaam. The government has commended Tanzania’s  ladies national golf team for finishing in the second position in the just ended14th edition of the female All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) event held at the Achimota Golf Club in Accra, Ghana.
 The event saw Tanzania’s top ladies golfer, Madina Hussein emerge the tournament’s best player followed by Zethu Nyeki of South Africa. Zimbabwe's 15-year-old golfer, Danielle Bekker was presented with the best junior players' award after she nailed 251 points.
Speaking yesterday, the National Sports Council (NSC) Secretary General, Alex Nkenyenge, said what the four ladies golfers did in Accra was what the other sports national teams were supposed to do when competing internationally.
Nkenyenge said fighting spirits as well as individual efforts made the whole golf stakeholders in the country to celebrate the victory.
“This is the fruits of the best selection made by the Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) ahead of the competition. There are so many ladies golfers in the country, but the four have made us proud,
“I call upon other sports bodies in the country to emulate the national golf ladies team.  They have to avoid selecting incompetent athletes, who would lead to poor performances,” said Nkenyenge.
He said that the government was following the results since day one of the event and that it was preparing to accord the team with a hero’s welcome.
South African emerged the top in the event which featured 18 countries. Kenya was third and Uganda and Zimbabwe also finished in the top five.
The host team, Ghana, placed sixth while their fellow West African neighbors, Senegal came 7th, Zambia placed 8th and Nigeria placed 9th. Each player from the top nine teams was rewarded for participating in the event.
