Maugo issues stern warning to Malawi boxing opponent

Dar es Salaam. Prominent Tanzanian professional boxer MadaMaugo yesterday issued a stern warning ahead of his East and Central Africa Super-middleweight title fight against Malawian boxer Charles Misanjo that is scheduled to be held in Tanzania on August 18 this year.
Maugo – affectionately known as ‘King Maugo’ to his admirers – told The Citizen in an exclusive interview that he is well prepared for the 10-round bout that will take place at the PTA Hall in Dar es Salaam.
“I have trained well, and nothing will prevent me from recording an early knockout win. I normally run 32 kilometers daily in order to maintain my shape and endurance. During the bout, I will not let the belt cross the Tanzanian border with Malawi,” said Maugo – boldly adding: “my fans know my ability in the ring, so I urge them to come and give me support… I promise not to disappoint them.”
The bout has been organized by the first female professional boxing promoter, Sophia Mwakagenda, using her firm ‘Lady-in-Red Promotions.’
The aim of the bout is to raise funds for purchasing sanitary pads for primary and secondary schoolgirls in Tanzania’s Southern Highland regions who usually fail to attend classes during their menstrual periods.
MsMwakagenda said that day will also see female professional boxers Flora Machela and Sarafina Julius – who will battle it out in the Bantamweight category – and Asha ‘Ngedere’ who comes face to face, blow to blow, with Happy Daudi in a Super-lightweight bout.
Both bouts are scheduled for six rounds each – and the four female pugilists are already in intensive training, having promised thrilling times for spectators on that day.
Proud to be the first woman professional boxing promoter in Tanzania, Mwakagenda says she has vowed to stage boxing events in ways that are different from the traditional ‘shows’ routinely put on by other promoters.
“There are so many challenges which Tanzanians across the country face that the ‘Lady-in-Red’ – working in collaboration with the ‘She Can Foundation’ – decided to stage boxing matches with a clear purpose… And this is just the start, and we have so many plans which are designed to effectively address the challenges.
