Dar es Salaam. National Microfinance Bank (NMB) will spend Sh20 million on sponsoring this year’s sports jamboree for Higher Learning Institutions in Zanzibar.

The bank’s acting chief of Retail Banking, Abdulmajid Nsekela, said yesterday that they are proud to be associated with sports promotion in the country.

Nsekela told The Citizen that bankrolling sports events involving students from higher learning institutions was one of the best ways to turn around the country’s sports fortunes.

“We would like to join hands with the government in promoting sports in the country by sponsoring this year’s games for Higher Learning institutions in Zanzibar,” he said.

Over 2,000 students from various higher learning institutions in Zanzibar are expected to compete in the event, according to the organisers.

They will battle it out for top honours in various sporting events, including netball, basketball, football, athletics, table tennis and volleyball.

Zanzibar second Vice President Seif Ali Idd praised the bank for the support and urged other institutions to follow suit.

“It will be an occasion for students to compete in a spirit of conviviality and respect of sports ethics,” Idd said.

He assured sports leaders and the business community that the government was committed towards promoting sports in Zanzibar.
