Dar es Salaam. Isamilo International School in Mwanza will be a hive of activity this weekend as it hosts the National Open Swimming Championship.

The Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) secretary general, Ramadhan Namkoveka, told The Citizen yesterday that the two-day championship will roar into life on Friday.

This will be the first time for Mwanza to host the championship since its inception.

Namkoveka said preparations for the championship were on course.

He said they will use the event to select swimmers who would form the national team for the African Swimming Federation (Cana) Zone Three Championships scheduled for next month Dar es Salaam.

According to Namkoveka, the team would also compete in various international competitions, including the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, Youth Olympics in Argentina and Cana Zone Four in Malawi.

“Staging national competitions is one of the best ways to gauge swimmers’ skills ahead of the forthcoming international competitions,” he said.

“Today is the deadline for swimmers wishing to compete in this year’s national championship to confirm their participation,” he said.

He said over 100 swimmers from various regions across the country are expected to battle it out for top honours at the Mwanza event.

He named clubs that have registered for the national championship so far as Bluefins Swimming Club and Taliss Swimming Club both of Dar es Salaam; Kennedy House of Arusha, International School Moshi (ISM Moshi) and Mwanza Swimming Club.
