TZ swimmer secures scholarship in England

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s up-and-coming swimmer Dennis Mhini has secured an opportunity to join St Felix School in England under the auspices of the school.

Mhini – one of the youngsters who performed impressively at the just concluded Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he is expected to leave for England later this year, where he hopes to develop into even a better swimmer.

The gifted swimmer also take on studies during his stay in England, according to his father, Hamis Mhini.

“This great opportunity for my son and I am optimistic that he will be able to deliver,” Mhini said in an interview with The Citizen yesterday.

The youngster finished third in the boys’ 100m freestyle contest after clocking 58.53 seconds at the Youth Olympics.

He expressed his delight at the opportunity to become a better swimmer with his quest being to contribute to St Felix’s success.

“It’s quite exciting because it’s something that I have been working on for quite a long time; so I feel blessed that they have actually considered offering me a scholarship,” he said.

“I am going out there just to gain the experience and exposure to develop myself to become a better swimmer, hopefully represent Tanzania in major international competitions,” he added.

St Felix School’s swimming club was formed in 2004 with a view to providing young swimmers with an opportunity to showcase their skills.
