Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Ports Authority has suspended the allocation of vehicles to private inland container depots, saying it is able to handle cargo consignments after a decline in cargo ships at the Dar es Salaam Port.

The Authority said it unjustifiable to continue allocating vehicles to ICD operators, while its internal capacity lies idle, in a letter addressed to one ICD operator and copied to other industry players.

An industry player said the move has no cause for alarm as it is part of the Standard Operating Procedures.

Tanzania handled 14.4 million tonnes of cargo in 2014 and was expected to hit at 18 million tonnes last year.

However, the cargo started declining recently influenced by the fear of charging 18 per cent in Value-Added Tax (VAT) on transit goods and global changes, especially the shake-up of China’s economy.
