Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has surpassed revenue collected on property tax section during the first quarter of the 2017/18 financial year, the parliament was told today, November 14.

Responding to a question raised by Bukoba Urban Member of Parliament Wilfred Lwakatare (CUF) who wanted to know if the government had plans to replace TRA with local government in revenue collection over inefficiency, deputy minister for Finance and Planning, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, said TRA had recorded achievement in the area.

Dr Kijaji said TRA has collected Sh13.2 billion in property tax, surpassing the Sh11.9 billion target by Sh1.3 billion.

“Since TRA has efficiently done the job, the government wasn’t considering giving the job to local government authorities. Rather, we don’t see the need for two different forces to be used in the same area,” she said.

According to Dr Kijaji, TRA has surpassed revenue collection in almost all sectors, therefore, increasing funds disbursed to local governments for implementation of development projects. She said during the first quarter of the first fiscal year Sh1 trillion was released.
