Tanzanian embassy is not in Jerusalem – but that’s ‘not important’

Mr Mahiga

What you need to know:

The Tanzanian embassy in Israel is in Ramat Gan, a city in Tel Aviv district. In an interview with The Jerusalem Post recently, Foreign Minister Augustine Mahiga when asked if Tanzania considered opening its embassy in Jerusalem and not Ramat Gan, Mahiga said the idea was “hinted at, occasionally.”

Dar es Salaam. The new Tanzanian embassy in Israel is in Ramat Gan, a city in Tel Aviv district – and not in Jerusalem.
But that is immaterial, according to Tanzania’s envory to Israel, Job Masima, as reported by The Jerusalem Post.
The important thing, he told The Jerusalem Post in a recent interview, is to open the Embassy “somewhere inside Israel.”
The Jerusalem Post would go on to ask Foreign Minister Augustine Mahiga if Tanzanian had considered opening its embassy in Jerusalem.
The idea was “hinted at, occassionally” he said. Opening an embassy, added Mr Mahiga, “is a sovereign decision.”
“But at the same time there are certain international opinions, resolutions and concerns with which we don’t want to be out of step.”
Tanzania is the 15th Africa state to open an embassy in Israel, and the fourth to open one in the last three years, according to the The Jerusalem Post.
The publication described Mr Mahiga’s visit as a signal of the importance Tanzania attaches to its “renewed” friendship with Israel.
Tanzania, says The Post, established diplomatic ties with Israel in 1963 and “severed them under intense Arab pressure after the Yom Kippur War in 1973.”

The ties were re-established in 1995.
When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Mr Mahiga at a mini-summit with six African leaders at Entebbe in 2016, he received a promise that Tanzania would open an embassy in Israel, according to The Jerusalem Post.
Ambassador Masima, took his post in Tel Aviv nine months ago. Till the recent embassy opening, he had worked out of temporary offices.
