Tanzanian university holds symposium in honour of Nyerere

Dar es Salaam. The Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy based in the city on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 held a symposium aimed at discussing various political, economic, social and leadership issues in relation to country’s industrialisation agenda.

The symposium was held ahead of the 19th commemorations of the death of the Founding Father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

Nyerere died aged 77 at a London hospital on October 14, 1999.

The Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Joyce Ndalichako, graced the event.

The event was live broadcast by a local TV station from Dar es Salaam.

Delivering her opening remarks, Prof Ndalichako commended the organisers for efforts to continue remembering Mwalimu Nyerere and his profound legacy to the Tanzanians and humanity as a whole.

“Mwalimu was passionate about national interests for the betterment of Tanzanians and the nation,” she said.

She added “It is my expectation that the resolutions that will be generated during this event today will help to foster country’s economic growth.”

Prof Ndalichako further asserted that the government was determined to continue improving education system to ensure that all Tanzanians enjoyed the right to quality education.

“My office will continue to support all programmes that are organised to pass knowledge to future generations with a view of enabling the youth to acquire knowledge,” she said.

One of Africa’s greatest statement, Nyerere was given a fitting burial on October 23, 1999 at Butihama Village where he was born, grew up and retired after a distinguished political career and a principled leadership, in which both supporters and critics admired and appreciated.

The two-day symposium was attended by various government serving and retired officials, religious leaders, academicians, among others.
