The government has promised residents of two villages in Chemba, Dodoma, that it will compensate them for their land that will be taken to construct a dam.

The $420-million project will be undertaken at Farkwa, which straddles Babutole and Mombose villages.

The project is being funded by the World Bank’s Water Sector Development Programme.

“You will be compensated for your land,” Water and Irrigation deputy minister Jumaa Aweso assured the villagers here on Monday.

He also warned that strong measures would be taken against public officials who misuse water project funds countrywide.

Chemba MP Juma Nkamia (CCM) was concerned about the authorities’ failure to find alternative areas for the villagers to relocate.

Upon its completion, the project will store water up to 850,000 cubic metres.

According to the Dodoma Urban Water Supply and Sewage Authority’s technical manager, Kashilimu Mayunga, demand for water in Dodoma municipality is 46 million litres daily.

The government shift of its base from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma will mean that more than 2 million people be living in the new capital and the demand for water will increase.
