A big chunk of the envisaged Sh30 billion budget for research and development for financial year 2010/11 will be spent on agriculture researches and training of scientists, according to Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH).

The commission chairman, Prof Burton Mwamila told journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday that researches on agriculture will be geared towards implementing the Kilimo Kwanza (Agriculture First) programme.

The researches will be focused on areas such agriculture, fishing and livestock keeping and fishing.

And due to shortage of researchers in the country, he said part of the budget will also be used to improve research training in higher learning institutions.

“Majority of researchers in the country are above fifty years… We need to have new researchers and this will be achieved by strengthening training at higher learning institutions,” he noted.

In line with training of new researchers, emphasis will also be put on improvement of research facilities and technology, according to Prof Mwamila.

On his part, COSTECH Director General Hassan Mshinda praised the government for the move, noting that the budget will go a long way in solving hurdles facing researchers in the country.

“This will also help students have scholarships and improve their teaching and research system,” he said
