By Jacinta Odongo, Insight Correspondent Kampala. With the hot sunny season around, most people have installed fans in their homes. We all like cooling our homes when they get heated-up by the sun so having a fan is one of the best ways to achieve this. However, majority of us do not consider the space element when choosing home fans. The good news is that using ceiling fans will not take much space. Types of ceiling fans According to Mr Joseph Nsubuga, a senior sales executive at Ssebagala and Sons Electro Centre, ceiling fans fall under three categories. “There is the revolving fan and the helicopter fan, also known as the propeller fan. However, there are two types of helicopter fans; the helicopter fan with lights and the one without lights,” he explains. Revolving fan Just like the name suggests, a revolving fan spins and rotates in different angles when blowing. “The revolving fan is normally used in smaller residential rooms with shorter ceiling boards,” he explains. This type of fan has a propeller which enables it to blow sufficient air when rotating. It works well in rooms with shorter ceilings because it has low capacity of air flow. Helicopter fan “Under this category, there is the helicopter fan made with lights extra and one without extra lights,” Mr Nsubuga explains. The helicopter fan without lights is suitable in large places such as supermarkets, conference rooms, banks and churches. It has broad propellers, which gives a helicopter appearance thus the name helicopter fan. Helicopter fan with lights This type is usually used in homes because of the added lighting advantage. The lights are placed on top of the fan with the support of a metallic-like extension. It is attractive in appearance and most people place in their living rooms. 1. Advantages The good thing about a ceiling fan is that it saves a lot of space compared to a stand fan. Unlike the stand fan which is normally placed either in the middle or at the extreme corner of the room, ceiling fans are normally fixed on the ceiling boards thus occupying less space. Ceiling fans also limit accidents in the house, especially a home with children. Children are very curious and have the tendency to experiment how things work, whenever they come across an electronic-like a fan, they can do anything and it might result into a major accident. But since a ceiling fan is fixed on the ceiling, it gives the minimal chances of reaching their (the ceiling) which helps to prevent accidents. 2. Disadvantages Fans blow out direct air, which is harmful to some people, particularly those who suffer from chest and heart diseases. Also, if these ceiling fans are not fixed properly by a professional, they may cause accidents since they can fall from the ceiling. Considerations “When choosing a ceiling fan, one should consider quality as their first propriety. There are three types of ceiling fans with the best brand, which includes yash, hind and vento,” says Mr Nsubuga. One should also consider the interior design of the house. Since ceiling fans are made with extra lights, people should limit usage of other lights. Too much lighting can ruin the house theme,” says Ms Annie Kamanyiro, the proprietor of Annie’s metalworks interior and exterior design. The size of the room also matters a lot. People should buy ceiling fans according to the size of the room. “The revolving fan can be found at 16-inch size, but for the helicopter fan, there is size 24 inches and 56 inches that is suitable for bigger rooms,” explains Mr Nsubuga. Also, one should also consider costs, especially if they want durable and quality fans.
